When you hear the term: “elimination diet,” what do you think? If you are like most people, you think that you will have to eliminate everything from your diet including food. Before you jump to conclusions, let me tell you a little more about it.

An elimination diet has been used by many health care professionals for a multitude of reasons. Celebrity psychiatrist Daniel Amen uses it to treat a number of mental symptoms. Many doctors use it to troubleshoot food allergies. It can also be used as a cleanse.

To optimize your brain and body health, you should start by eliminating foods that cause inflammation in the brain and gut (and the rest of the body for that matter). A lot of us eat foods that are making us sick without even knowing that our food is the culprit. An elimination diet could be the reboot that your body needs to optimize your health.

So, how do you do it? There are 6 foods that usually cause symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, slowed thinking, irritability, aggression, anxiety, depression, sleep problems, body aches, and even more severe conditions. The notorious 6 are foods made with corn, dairy, gluten, processed sugar, and soy. You would want to remove these foods from your diet for 3-4 weeks. Slowly and one at a time, add these foods back in.

You may find that dairy makes you irritable or gluten makes you have brain fog. You will find that some foods may need to be of high quality. Some foods may need to be for certain occasions. Some, you may need to eliminate all together.

Your gut is like a second brain. It has 1,000,000 neurotransmitters that sync with the neurotransmitters in your brain. Once those neurotransmitters can communicate effectively without irritants, you will find that you will feel lighter and your cravings subside within the first week. You will also be rewarded with increased energy, clear thinking, a better memory, better sleep, and higher motivation.

Here are a few of hints that will make your diet a success.

  • Think about what you can eat instead of what you can’t.

  • Eat protein with every meal.

  • Eat full fat food items like avocados, nuts, nut milks, olive oil, olives, mayonnaise, and fattier cuts of meat.

  • Try new recipes.

  • Eat 4-5 small meals.

  • Plan and prepare your meals ahead of time so you don’t improvise.

  • Drink lots of water.

  • Enjoy your month and takes lots of notes.
